Enphase: why solar shuts down at peak sun (AC Voltage High & the 5-minute timer)

If production suddenly drops during strong sunshine and the Enphase app shows AC Voltage High or another grid-related event, the microinverters may have paused because the AC supply was outside their permitted operating range. This is a protective response, not a reason to change safety settings.

Why it can happen

  • Utility voltage can fluctuate. Solar export can also contribute to voltage rise on the connection between your system and the grid.
  • Wiring, connections, or circuit design can contribute to voltage issues. Only a qualified professional can determine the cause.
  • Other grid voltage or frequency disturbances can cause a temporary shutdown and reconnection wait.

About the restart delay

Once the grid returns to an acceptable range, microinverters must wait before reconnecting. Around five minutes is common, but the actual delay depends on the approved grid profile and conditions. A new disturbance can restart the waiting period.

Safe checks

  1. Capture the exact alert, its time, and a screenshot of the production graph. Note whether the problem repeats near midday or affects many panels together.
  2. Check for a utility outage or voltage complaints and note whether production returns after grid conditions settle.
  3. If it repeats on sunny days, contact us so a technician can review event logs and electrical conditions and coordinate with the utility if needed.

Do not repeatedly cycle solar breakers, open equipment, take live voltage measurements, or change the grid profile or voltage limits. Call or text us at 806-454-7873. If there is smoke, a burning smell, or sparking, stay away from the equipment and contact emergency services.
